Can I change the CMMC level after I start?

No. The selected level is fixed for that assessment. If you chose the wrong level, start a separate assessment with the correct level.

Do I need to pay before starting Level 2?

A self-assessor can start and work through the Level 2 requirements without paying. The one-time Level 2 unlock controls the SPRS score and paid tools or exports for that assessment. Assessor access follows the organization subscription.
